Winter Wonder Land

Last week you saw us enjoying 70 degree weather and climbing trees! This week you find us with 6-8 inches of snow! Since this area is not equip to handle snow storms (i.e. road management) we have witnessed a town of 200,000 + get shut down in a matter of hours. School has been called off since Tuesday. I have not worked since Wednesday. We have had to drip our faucets since Tuesday in fear of frozen pipes since they do not insulate them as well. We have experienced rolling blackouts (i.e. longest we were without power...45 minutes) in single digit weather. Last but not least the grocery stores ran out of milk and who knows what else! Matt was lucky enough to get the last four 1/2 gallon whole milks last night in a brave drive to the store! I don't question his driving skills...I do however, highly questioning the skills of the locals!
So my children and I have experienced cabin fever this week! We were lucky enough to get out for a little bit (i.e. 15-20 minutes) the last two days and everyone but Jax seemed to really enjoy the time outdoors! And no, Averie is not wearing a helmet...it's her hat! Even though I do thoroughly believe all children should wear helmets for all play (must be the speech therapist in me), in any kind of weather, I always have my lovely hubby to calm all my fears so my children do not suffer humiliation!

Last Weeks Weather

These pictures were taken in our front yard in the tree! We were thoroughly enjoying the weather and bragging to most family members about how nice 70 degree weather felt...while they suffered miserably in their cold weather! Little did we know what was to be in store!

Enjoying the warm breeze...

We had insanely nice weather the last few weeks of January. Some days reached into the upper 70's! We of course took full advantage and spent most of our time outside during these days! One particular day Halle, Averie, and I were in the back yard enjoying the weather! The girls were running around playing when Averie decided to join me...I must have looked bored just sitting in my chair! She pulled up a little chair and sat down next to me! We had a chat and she tinkered with a toy and then she informed me she was going to go golf! As she scooted out of the chair I noticed she smeared mud across the chair. I was a little upset since she had on new pants! I told her to come back over so I could inspect the damage. While she was walking back I leaned down closer to view the mud in the chair since it was a strange color. I got myself closer to the chair and the smell knocked me back...THAT'S NOT MUD YOU POOPED YOUR PANTS I yell into the universe!!! I turn to look at Averie and say"You pooped your pants...why didn't you tell me you had to go to the bathroom?". She replies with a simple "I duno". I start to strip her down on the patio and send Halle in for the wipes and a garbage sack. After I get her bottom half stripped and cleaned I take my frustration out on the chair as I clean it up! I also start to notice the yard needs a little clean up as well! So while I am in my OCD mode I forget my little one is running around the yard in half her birthday suit...I look over and realize she does not seem to mind so I go about my business! After I finish picking it up I informed Averie I was going in to get her some pants...I don't think she even heard me! Of course the OCD stems into the house and i soon forget altogether what I was coming into the house for...those of you who know me understand this behavior very well! I probably wouldn't have remembered at all if Halle didn't come into the house to use the bathroom! I quickly run into Averie's room and grab a pair of pants and run out to the back yard to find this...

New Year's Eve...a little late!

After you have children one would think the New Year Celebration would become a bit more tame, if not extinct! However, I find myself staying up a whole lot later, laughing a whole lot harder, and appreciating the meaning of celebrating a new year as a family a whole lot more!

To start our night off right we made every kind of h'orderves we could ever crave. We whipped up bagel dip, little smokies, relish tray's (i.e. we even had the baby corn), cheese and crackers, chips and salsa, Oreo balls, cookies, and SPARKLING CIDER!!! The kids went NUTS for the sparkling cider! They felt very special since they even got to sip it out of special glasses!

We had the TV on to one of the local stations broadcasting all the events going on in Time Square when Halle noticed all of the people had on 2011 hats, headbands, and glasses. She felt it was very important for us to participate in this tradition. I thought to myself how are we gonna pull this off...when out of the blue Halle brings me a piece of paper and asks me to draw 2011 on it so she can cut it out and tape it to her headband! What a creative little stinker! I of course, hand that task over to my hubby since I lack in the drawing department...however, I excel in the decorating department! Halle, Averie, and myself made bright and colorful headbands for the entire crew. After we distributed the headbands to everyone I noticed Jaxon thought his was edible and Matt thought his looked better on his chair! But all the girls rocked theirs for most of the night!

Next we had our dance party...if you know us hardly a day goes by without a dance party! So as you know we would not miss adding this to our to do list on our last night in 2010! After the dance party little man tuckered out and went down for the night. I thought the girls would be following shortly there after so I tried to find family friendly performances for the girls to watch to calm down. One came up real quick...Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair"! I had heard all the debate about this little diddy but I had never actually seen or heard it before. I figured it couldn't be all that bad since she was, after all, Will Smith's little one! As the performance started I became very engrossed and a little dumbfounded at the concept of the song! As I snapped out of it I find both of the girls in the same trance I had been. Now, I am not sure how I feel about this little number but it did accomplish the family friendly performance I was looking for so I am happy!

After the performance I initiate the hair pulling/teething clinching task of getting the girls to complete the bedtime routine (i.e. brush teeth/hair, potty). I knew it was going to be a battle from the word go...Halle immediately attempted to bribe me with all sorts of wonderful, well behaved antics she would use over the next few days (i.e. I will clean the whole house, change all of Jax diapers, take care of Chole...) and while I am listening to her I notice Averie grab her cup and jabber something in my direction as well. I fixate on Halle at this point simply because if she does it her little shadow will follow along right in step. As I am arguing with Halle I notice Averie is starting to yell as well. However, it is not being directed at anyone! Halle and I stop to look at her and I start to regret the sparkling cider! Then I realize her cup is turned upside down and she is dancing around, while yelling into her cup, with her eyes closed! I quickly start to decipher..."I whip my hair, I whip my hair" and realize she is imitating the performance we just watched! I inform Halle what she is doing and after hysterical laughter from the both of us we start yelling for Matt to come out and look at her.

The yelling snaps Averie out of her trance and I am sad since Matt misses it and most of these hilarious times are rarely ever repeated! With little hope, I ask her to sing the song for her dad one more time. To my suprise and without one ounce of hesitation she busts out with the hardcore rap version of the song! We again start to laugh but Matt has no idea what she is performing. After we inform him of the song I run to get the camera hoping to catch a quick snap of the performance. By the time I get back she is already done! I think there will be no chance of getting her to perform for a third time but I take my chances! And what do you know, she blew the statistics right out of the water! You will all get to enjoy a wonderful performance via video below!

After we all calmed down, we got our teeth brushed and our bedtime story read! We all said a little prayer for the new year, a thank you for the past year, and had one last little giggle together in 2010! We hope all of you had a wonderful end to 2010 and we wish you the best in 2011!

Averie's Favorite Things...

Basketball Star

Halle enjoyed soccer very much this last year but we were always waiting to see that little spark of competitive spirit kick in during the season...it never happened! Now don't get me wrong she is still very good at soccer she just appeared to lack desire to own the ball/field. We decided she is just too kind spirited and we were most likely not going to see a Katie Jr. out on the field!

As soon as soccer was finished basketball season started. Halle was given the choice to play basketball or take some time off...she of course wanted to play basketball so we signed her up. She again has practise twice a week and a game every Saturday...yes, we are exhausted but she loves being on the go!

On the day of her first game Halle was very excited to be putting on her uniform and lacing up her b-ball shoes! I couldn't get her to stop dribbling the ball inside the house for the life of me and she was running around like a mad woman asking..."Is it time to go yet?" and stating "I don't want to be late!". I kept telling her "No, you still have 3 hrs to go" every hour on the hour until it was time to go! When we finally gave her the go ahead she was yelling at us to hurry up and get in the car, assisting her siblings in buckling up, and making sure to tell her dad exactly where to navigate the car!

As we pull up to the gym Halle looks out into the sea of little basekballers running into the gym and can not contain herself..."Dad just pull over and I will run in...Dad hurry up and park the car...Dad I am so late HURRY UP!". After multiple comments to calm down the car is parked and she jumps out to run in by herself...Dad is just as excited and says "I am just gonna make sure she gets in"...leaving mom to get the diaper bag and two babies in all by myself!

When I enter the gym a flood of old memories wash over me...the smell of popcorn, the smell of the gym floor, the sounds of the scoreboard, the whistles, the crowd cheering, coaches yelling, the sound of the bouncing basketball echoing through the gym...I'm not going to lie I am extremely excited to be involved in basketball once again! I look around for the rest of the family and see them sitting in one corner of the gym and head in their direction. As I get closer I notice Halle's look of excitement has turn to pure fear. She says..."Mom I don't feel good and my tummy hurts". I tell her she will be fine once she gets to shoot a few balls and she states "I think I will just sit with you guys". I tell her that is not an option if she doesn't want to play we will just leave. Her dad gives me the look of...seriously Katie...and walks her over to her coach. When he gets back over he tells me Halle told her coach right away that she didn't feel good and that the coach had said she could sit out the first quarter.
So the game starts and if you have every watched 2nd grade basketball you know what I mean when I say it is much more fun to watch paint dry! There is not a lot of action at this level and I am thinking to myself this is going to be terrible to sit through if she decided to play sick! We make it through the 1st quarter and the score is 4 to 0 with Halle's team losing. To my surprise Halle walks out onto the court for the 2nd quarter. I find myself very excited to know she is overcoming a fear and that we are actually going to see if she can play ball!
The whistle blows and we are off! The opposing team gets the ball and heads down the court. They pass the ball twice and during that second pass I see Halle heading towards the ball and with a graceful jump into the air she steals it...I lose it...I was jumping up and down and screaming...I thought Matt would be telling me to shut up but when I look in his direction he is jumping up and down and yelling as well!

Now in 2nd grade basketball they don't exactly get to fast break down to the other end once they steal the ball. The whistle is blown and the ref comes over and takes the ball. Apparently, Halle had stolen the ball from a girl that she was not guarding so technically even though it was a great play the red team got the ball back. I, of course, am in the corner making it well known I think that is a stupid rule and at this point Matt is now telling me to keep it down. So the whistle is blown and the ball is in play. This time, as the ball is attempting to be passed to the girl Halle is guarding Halle just steps in front of her and steals the ball again...with the attitude written all over her face like this is way to easy! We again go nuts and Halle gives us a thumbs up sign with a huge smile on her face! She takes the ball out and throws it into her teammate and they are heading down the floor. Halle makes it to her center position and is intently watching the ball being passed around. Finally they pass the ball into her and she turns, shoots, and scores!!! Matt and I are going ballistic and she turns to look at us with shock and excitement written all over her face! She through her hands in the air and jumped up and down. All her teammates gave her a high five and her coach was yelling "Great Job"! It was a great moment!
Now I could go play by play during this game...but I will spare you the torture! Halle played an excellent first game in her basketball career! She scored 8 out of the 10 points scored by her team...the other team never scored another basket, she had 12 rebounds, and 16 steals! She was very excited and proud of herself...and that is all we ask for her!

Hope you all can make it down to a game sometime in her career...I would record it but I am a bit more vocal in this game in comparison to soccer!!!
